The media office of former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, has slammed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing the anti-graft agency of engaging in a politically motivated campaign against the former governor.
In a statement signed by Bello’s spokesperson, Ohiare Michael, the EFCC’s recent actions were described as a “hatchet job” driven by personal bias rather than a genuine commitment to combating corruption.
The EFCC had recently declared Yahaya Bello wanted, sparking widespread media coverage. However, the former governor voluntarily appeared at the agency’s headquarters, and after questioning, was allowed to leave without any charges being filed. This development has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the true motives behind the EFCC’s actions.
“If the EFCC was genuinely focused on prosecution, would the agency not have taken him in on that day?” the statement questioned, hinting at possible ulterior motives behind the agency’s public declarations.
Bello’s media team expressed concerns over the agency’s integrity, suggesting that its actions may be politically driven. The statement also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in, urging for fairness and transparency in the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.
The media office emphasized that the fight against corruption should be impartial, stating: “Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians.” It further stressed the importance of equitable governance and accountability, urging for an approach that does not single out individuals for political reasons.
This latest statement from Yahaya Bello’s camp adds to the growing debate over the EFCC’s handling of high-profile cases, with many Nigerians watching closely to see how the matter will unfold.
