The current Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Haliru Nababa, is a thorough-bred Corrections Officer, consummate criminologist, seasoned administrator and a pragmatic leader of Sokoto state origin.
Nababa is an alumnus of the then University of Sokoto, now Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) where he graduated in the year 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree in History. He also obtained a Diploma in Criminology from the same institution, years later.
He enlisted into the then Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) now Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the year 1990, as an Assistant Superintendent. He rose through the ranks by dint of hard work to become an Assistant Controller General (ACG) in 2018 after which he was graciously appointed Controller General (CG) on the 10th May, 2021.
Nababa attended several prerequisite and specialised courses both within and outside the shores of Nigeria, which manifests in the exceptional leadership style he has consistently displayed while heading several Custodial Centres as Officer In-charge; Kebbi and Sokoto State Commands as Controller and now the entire Nigerian Correctional Service.
In 2014, he received a Federal Government letter of commendation for displaying great courage and gallantry as officer-in-charge of Custodial Centres in the North–East of the country during the height of terrorist activities, perpetrated by Boko Haram.
In about three years of Nababa’s stewardship as CG, inmates and staff welfare; infrastructure upgrade; robust partnerships; as well as inmates’ training have received great attention, culminating in a more vibrant and efficient Service.
He is adorned with the National Honour of, Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). He is also a Member of the National Institute (mni) being a part of Senior Executive Course 41, at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State and is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.
Haliru Nababa is widely travelled and epitomises loyalty; dedication; discipline; visionary leadership; and integrity in public service. He is married and blessed with children and his hobbies include reading, travelling and playing table tennis.
