Top Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, gathered in Ebonyi State to bid farewell to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former Governor of old Abia State and ex-Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Onu was laid to rest in his hometown, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, after passing away at age 72 in April.
The ceremony brought together prominent political figures, including APC National Chairman Alhaji Umar Ganduje, Governors Alex Otti of Abia, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and representatives for Anambra Governor Charles Soludo and Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma. Former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi was also in attendance, underscoring Onu’s influence across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
President Tinubu, represented by Minister of Works David Umahi, lauded Onu as a “perfect gentleman” dedicated to national progress. “Onu’s contributions to our nation, particularly his role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC), will not be forgotten,” Tinubu’s tribute read. “His selfless dedication to unity and development remains an inspiration.” The President prayed for Onu’s soul, expressing condolences to his family and the community.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru also honored the late statesman’s legacy, calling Onu a “leader of integrity” and a true advocate of social justice. “Today, we celebrate a man whose life of service and commitment to equity and democratic ideals has left an enduring legacy in our land and beyond,” Nwifuru said. “As Governor of old Abia State, he modernized our infrastructure, expanded educational opportunities, and improved healthcare, transforming lives across the region.”
The Governor described Onu’s devotion as “unwavering,” noting his efforts to unite communities and amplify unheard voices. “His Excellency Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was more than a politician; he was a visionary who believed in building both infrastructure and people. He served with relentless energy, and his impact will be felt for generations.”
The late Ogbonnaya Onu’s funeral drew leaders from across political divides, unified in honoring a man known for his principled leadership, commitment to progress, and lasting contributions to Nigeria.
