Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, on his triumphant victory in Saturday’s Edo governorship election.
Okpebholo was formally declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, after outpacing other contenders.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu commended APC national leaders, Edo leaders, and party governors for their tireless efforts in securing victory. The President noted that Okpebholo’s win testifies to the people’s unwavering support for the ruling party’s progressive ideals, economic reengineering program, and commitment to enhancing Nigerians’ lives.
Tinubu urged Okpebholo to view his victory as a challenging call to service, rather than a reason to celebrate. He encouraged Okpebholo to demonstrate magnanimity by reaching out to his political rivals and uniting the people of Edo to ensure development. The President also praised other candidates for their contributions to advancing Nigeria’s democracy, highlighting that peaceful contests like Saturday’s election showcase Nigeria as a stable democracy.
Furthermore, Tinubu appealed to those aggrieved by the election outcome to seek redress through legal channels. He commended the people of Edo for their orderly and peaceful conduct during the election, underscoring Nigeria’s maturing democracy after 25 years.
“I commend INEC and our security agencies for working round the clock to conduct a successful, peaceful, and largely hitch-free exercise,” Tinubu added. “INEC has once again demonstrated its commitment to organizing free and fair elections in our country”
