Southampton are ready to part ways with Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu, ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Saints defeated Leeds United 1-0 in the play-off final last Sunday to gain promotion to the English Premier League but Onuachu’s future remains uncertain.
Following an impressive performance for KRC Genk in the Belgian League, Onuachu caught the attention of the Saints who eventually paid €18m to sign him during the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season.
The lanky striker failed to replicate his fantastic form as he struggled to adapt to life in England, failing to score in all 12 of his appearances for the Saints, which led to a season-long loan move away from the club.
Onuachu joined the Turkish club in a loan deal that saw the club pay €1.5m while also covering his full salary.
With the Black Sea Storm, the red-hot Onuachu scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 25 matches, catching the eye of Trabzonspor, who are keen to extend his stay in Trabzon.
A Turkish outlet, Kuzey Ekspres, on Sunday reported that the Nigerian international was making attempts to negotiate with Southampton to facilitate his stay.
“Paul Onuachu will ask Southampton to facilitate the transfer to the claret-blue club in order to be transferred to Trabzonspor,” the outlet wrote on X.
Southampton had initially rejected Trabzonspor’s €15m offer for Onuachu but the latest report from The Real EFL indicated that the newly promoted side may be ready to part ways with the Nigerian striker.
“The Saints will look to contact clubs in the Super Lig, as well as hint at a potential domestic deal for Onuachu – which could allow a competitive rival to take a chance on the Nigerian. The forward has two years remaining on his deal, so Russell Martin’s side are in the ‘driver’s seat’ in terms of negotiation leniency,” the website wrote.
“The South England side want to offload Onuachu this summer, potentially to relieve their wage bill but also to recover some of their expenditure on his initial signing in January 2023. Having only made 12 appearances and not finding the back of the net, the ex-Midtjylland star clearly isn’t in Martin’s long or short-term plans.”
The 29-year-old is part of the Eagles squad that will face South Africa and the Benin Republic next month in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
