Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda PhD CON, has been awarded the prestigious title of “Climate Action Ambassador” by the Ibrahim Shehu Shema Centre for Renewable Energy Research at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Katsina.
The award recognizes Governor Radda’s remarkable commitment and vision towards addressing the impact of climate change through the deployment of innovative renewable energy solutions across various sectors in Katsina State.
Under Governor Radda’s leadership, the Katsina State Government has undertaken several strategic initiatives that align with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
The Governor approved the replacement of the state’s carbon-emitting diesel-powered street lighting system with an environmentally friendly solar street lighting system covering over 63 kilometers and the construction of the first off-grid solar mini-grid at the Government House in Nigeria, as well as a solar mini-grid at the General Hospital Katsina under the Energizing Healthcare Program.
Similarly, Katsina State Government led by Governor Radda deployed stand-alone solar plus battery energy storage systems in various ministries, departments, and agencies to reduce the cost of governance and the greenhouse gas effect on the ozone layer, was another trackable record by Governor Radda led government.
Governor Radda has set an ambitious target to develop 300MW of installed electricity capacity by 2030, with 90% coming from renewable sources. This aligns with the recent launch of the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and the passage of a new Electricity Act that decentralizes the electricity supply industry and paves the way for increased investments by sub-national governments and the private sector.
These renewable energy milestones positioned Governor Radda worthy of the Climate Action Ambassador.
At the award ceremony, the Governor was ably represented by the Special Assistant on Power, Hon. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed. The event brought together dignitaries and stakeholders in the renewable energy.
In his acceptance address, Hon. Ahmed expressed the Governor’s deep gratitude and reiterated Katsina State’s unwavering commitment to leading the charge in renewable energy adoption and climate action initiatives.
