Unknown gunmen on Wednesday night in Ibadan abducted a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain in Oyo state and an ally of Governor Seyi Makinde, Chief Benedict Akika.
Sources said the PDP chieftain was reportedly abducted at his residence in Olorunda Abba, Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo state by the gunmen that invaded his residence
The gunmen said to be fully armed reportedly stormed the PDP chieftain residence when he was relaxing with his family threatening to shoot any of the occupants that might put up resistance.
It was gathered further that on arrival, the gunmen were said to be shooting sporadic into the air to scare the residents and passersby after which the PDP chieftain was later whisked away to an unknown destination.
A foundation owned by the abducted PDP chieftain, Omituntun Benedict Foundation in a statement expressed concern on the abduction of Chief Benedict Akika on Wednesday 4th September 2024 at 9pm, saying “Agba’Akin Akika was taken away by unknown gunmen at his residence, Idi-Ape Akobo Olorunda-Abaa Ibadan within a group of his followers.
“We condemn this act of violence and demand the immediate and unconditional release of our Founder. Chief Benedict Akika is a respected member of the community, dedicated to empowerment and support.
“We are deeply worried about the safety and well-being of our Founder,” said the media advisor of the foundation.
The group added: “We urge the authorities to put more immediate action to ensure his safe release and bring the perpetrators to justice”.
“Omituntun Benedict Foundation calls on all relevant authorities, including law enforcement agencies and government officials, to work together to secure the release of our Founder. We also appeal to the general public to be prayerful and watchful for his safe return.”
Contacted, the Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Adewale Osifeso, said investigation has commenced into the matter.
