The Nigeria Police Force has filed charges against ten individuals allegedly involved in the recent #EndHunger protests, accusing them of conspiring to overthrown the government of President Bola Tinubu.
According to the charge sheet, the defendants are accused of treason, levying war against the state, and inciting mutiny.
The charges include conspiring to destabilize Nigeria, attacking and injuring police officers, burning public buildings, and calling for a military takeover.
The defendants, aged between 21 and 51, were arrested in various parts of the country during the protests, which took place from August 1 to 10, 2024.
They are accused of chanting slogans such as “Tinubu Must Go” and “Soja Muskeso” (meaning “Tinubu must go, it is military we want”).
The charges come days after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the freezing of bank accounts linked to the defendants pending investigation and prosecution.
Thediscovererng.com reports that as at the time of compiling this report, defendants’ lawyers are yet to comment on the charges.
