Edo state police command, had arrested a man identified as Francis Timothy for attacking police officers with guns during a night patrol in Benin City.
It was leart that the suspect got shot during the incident on April 6 at about 9:30 p.m.
A police source who pleaded anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, told our correspondent that hoodlums attacked Ugbekun Division officers in Benin City during a township patrol near Nomayo, Upper Sakponba Road.
The source added that during the incident, one of the hoodlums was shot.
“On April 6, 2024, at about 2130 hrs, the operatives of Ugbekun Division, Benin City, who were on township patrol along Nomayo, Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, were attacked with guns by hoodlums. In the process, one of the hoodlums, whose surname is unknown, was hit by the bullet.“
When contacted on Wednesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He also added that the suspect who was shot was taken to the hospital, where he obliged that he and two other people had ambushed the police cops with firearms.
He stated that one locally manufactured pistol and two live cartridges were retrieved, and effort was ongoing to apprehend the two other suspects.
He said, “He was arrested and taken to the hospital, where he made the statement that he, Francis Timothy, and two others attacked the policemen with guns. The guns —one locally made pistol with two live cartridges— were recovered from the suspects. Efforts are on to arrest the fleeing suspects.”
Thediscovererng.com had reported that officers of the Edo State Police Command had apprehended two suspects for allegedly kidnapping and robbing Imubhin Juliet, a pastor of Deeper Life Church in Benin City.
