With just two weeks to the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, Susan Gbemisola Alabi, the deputy governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Her defection was formally announced on Wednesday during the APC campaign rally in Akoko North West Local Government Area.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa welcomed Mrs. Alabi into the APC fold, describing her move as a significant boost to the party’s chances in the upcoming election. Alabi, in her speech, cited Aiyedatiwa’s exemplary leadership as a key factor behind her decision.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated the qualities needed to lead this state effectively,” Alabi stated. “After closely following his campaign, I’m convinced that he deserves our support. That’s why I’ve decided to bring my supporters from the SDP to join this winning team.”
The campaign rally, held at Oke Agbe, witnessed a carnival-like atmosphere as party members cheered the governor’s promises and Alabi’s declaration. Aiyedatiwa assured Alabi and her supporters of their integration into the APC, pledging to continue focusing on security, health, infrastructure, and agricultural development.
Speaking on his administration’s priorities, the governor emphasized that the proposed 2025 budget would be designed to address the developmental needs of every region within Ondo State. He added, “The 2025 budget will be well-structured to ensure that no part of Ondo State is left behind. We’re making progress, but development is a process that requires patience and deliberate effort.”
During the rally, the governor also received a strong endorsement from traditional rulers in the area. On behalf of the monarchs, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Olasehinde Ojo Adetona, expressed unwavering support for Aiyedatiwa’s re-election bid. “In Akoko North-West, there is no opposition to your candidacy. We will deliver our votes because we trust your leadership,” he affirmed.
The governor also garnered support from federal lawmaker Ifeoluwa Ehindero, who represents Akoko North-East/Akoko North-West at the House of Representatives. Ehindero praised Aiyedatiwa’s leadership and urged the people to support the governor in completing his projects.
During his address to the party faithful in Oke Irun, Aiyedatiwa addressed the importance of unity and commitment, stating, “The success of our party depends heavily on your unwavering support, active participation, and dedication on election day.”
At Afin-Akoko, the governor engaged directly with residents, explaining his decision to tour every significant area within the local government. “I intentionally visited all key areas to see things for myself and hear your challenges directly,” he explained. “This way, I can respond promptly and ensure that no issue affecting your communities is overlooked.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s grassroots campaign and strategic outreach appear aimed at consolidating support for his re-election bid, with an emphasis on continuity and development for Ondo State.
