Nigerian human rights activist and death penalty opponent Arthur Judah Angel was allegedly assassinated.
According to SaharaReporters, Arthur’s life was tragically cut short at his home in Edo state.
He was the president and founder of Life Wire International Foundation, who wrote: “I refused to die, a true life story of Divine Intervention on death row”.
Mr. Angel, who spent nine years on death row for a crime he did not commit in 1986, was tragically killed and buried in a shallow grave on Sunday.
His assailants also burned down his house after the assassination.
After being pardoned and released from prison, Angel dedicated himself to advocating against the death penalty in Nigeria.
He used his art exhibitions and drawings to speak out against capital punishment, travelling to over 15 countries for this cause.
The incident happened in Ugboha, Esan South East, Edo State.
Michael Ihaza, the Arthur’s cousin, confirmed the assassination.
He noted ongoing legal disagreements concerning family land, in which Angel played a crucial part.
