Marriage is more than just a union—it’s a divine relationship that God Himself initiated.
When God created woman for man, He brought them into a relationship and expected them to build fellowship with each other to sustain it.
But here’s where many people get confused: relationship and fellowship are not the same.
In Matthew 19:3-6, when the Pharisees try to test Jesus by endorsing divorce, He declares, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
This illustrates that marriage, as a relationship, is sacred and cannot be undone by human hands. God sustains the relationship, but the husband and wife must actively sustain it through fellowship.
Marriage involves two relationships: one with God and one between the husband and wife. God is the source and witness of marriage; while fellowship may be tested or even broken, the divine relationship itself remains intact.
God does not break what He has joined together, and even Satan cannot. Only man and woman can choose to separate what God has united.
Thus, the relationship comes before fellowship—a concept I’ll explore further in my next post and main reason for divorce or separation.
