Lagos State University’s Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development is set to participate in stakeholders in the state transport sector to address the challenges of motor park management.
The department, in a statement, emphasised the need for sustainable solutions, the expression is concerns about the disarrangements and environmental impact of motor parks.
The centre stressed the importance of “addressing the challenges faced in public motor parks, such as parks managers’ attitudes, insecurity, waste management and traffic congestion,” noting that its planned workshop on sustainable motor park management “seeks to contribute to the improvement of public transportation management in Nigeria and enhance the overall urban experience for commuters in Lagos State.”
The statement said CESSED and LASU’s School of Transport and Logistics would collaborate with key stakeholders in the state transport sector, including drivers, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, and the Lagos Waste Management Authority among others.
Scheduled for May 22 and 23, 2024, the workshop will focus on improving the operation and management of public motor parks by identifying requirements for sustainable practices, it added.
Notably, many Lagos motor parks are characterised by various activities, including the sale of food items, drinks, clothing, etc.
Frequently, visited some parks by our correspondent, apart from their clumsy nature, the sight of hoodlums who sometimes attempt to extort passengers makes lawful activities difficult for the passengers.
Lagos State sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, last year called for regulations to prohibit the sale of alcohol and drugs in motor parks, citing safety disquiet.
Mr. Babatunde Farinloye, speaking at the 2023 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign flag-off, FRSC Sector Commander, stressed the need for cooperation among elders and the transport unions to enforce such regulations for safer roads.
