Adedamola Kasunmu, the lawmaker representing Ikeja Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, has bemoaned the tenacious rise in the prices of goods even as the naira was beginning to gain some consequential value against the dollar.
Kasumu called on Nigerians to support and cooperate with President Bola Tinubu-led administration to succeed.
According to Kasunmu noted that the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, said this at the second edition of Alhaja Abibat Mogaji’s Ramadan Lecture 2024 held last Thursday at the Eko FM Marquee, Agidingbi,Lagos.
The PUNCH reported last week that the naira continued its gain against the United States dollars, appreciating both at the official foreign exchange and parallel markets, to the delight of many Nigerians.
At the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market, the naira gained N16 or 1.26 per cent as the dollar was quoted at N1,262.85/$ last Wednesday, stronger than N1,278.58 closed on Tuesday, data from the FMDQ Securities Exchange indicated.
The lawmaker while speaking said, “Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is working in a very steadfast way to make sure that he stays committed to the work that he campaigned for which the people voted him for.
“As you can see that within the few months of him being in office, he has been able to achieve something good in terms of good governance.
“The dollar is gradually going down and the naira is picking up but the prices of goods are not going down, this is something that has to come out from the people as well, because they have to cooperate with the government in their efforts to be able to benefit the general public.
“If you have the dollar coming down and the prices of goods and services going up then it is counter productive.
“It doesn’t speak well of what the administration is trying to do in terms of good governance and policies to make our country a better place to be. Nigeria is a very hopeful nation, a land of many opportunities if put into perspective.
“I believe with cooperation from the top to the bottom, across all boards and tiers of governments we would make things happen.”
Reason why the lecture was in the honour of his late grandmother, Kasumnu said, “The idea is to continue where we’ve started, remembering the good deeds of our dear matriarch-Alhaja Abibat Mogaji who lived an exemplary live as well as that of his late mother, Chief Arafat Kasunmu and his political mother Chief Olukemi Nelson.
“She lived a life of impact, one that birthed the likes of current President Bola Tinubu, myself and many more who lived and grew under her tutelage. We are giving honour to God almighty in her name that he will remember every good deed of hers while alive as an act of Ibadah.”
Imam Hakeem Kosoko of Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, the guest lecturer, while speaking on the theme of the lecture, ‘Rebuilding Nigeria’s Hope on Solid, Secure and Economic Growth – Islamic Perspective,’ corroborated the stance of the host while pleading faithful to strive to bring out a better edition of themselves.
