The governor made the announcement on Friday, December 20, while receiving the South-East delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by its Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara. The delegation had visited to express condolences over the heartbreaking incident at the children’s funfair at Islamic High School, Basorun in Ibadan.
Describing the tragedy as “painful, unfortunate, and preventable,” Makinde conveyed his deep sorrow over the loss of young lives. He stated that due to the gravity of the incident, he would refrain from public appearances and celebrations on his birthday this year.
“I will not go out; there will be no birthday celebration this year,” Governor Makinde solemnly declared.
Makinde also expressed his gratitude to the PDP BOT chairman and the delegation for being the first to offer condolences. He acknowledged their timely visit and extended his appreciation on behalf of the government and people of Oyo State.
Senator Wabara, speaking on behalf of the South-East PDP leaders, expressed deep sympathy for the victims’ families, especially the parents who have lost their children in the stampede. He emphasized the collective sorrow felt across the South-East and extended prayers for strength to bear the loss.
“We feel the pain of the sudden deaths of these children, and our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Oyo State, particularly the parents of the victims,” Wabara stated. “We pray that God grants you and the people of Oyo State the fortitude to endure this difficult time.”
The incident has shocked the nation, with many expressing disbelief and sorrow over the unnecessary loss of young lives during a public event. The governor’s decision to cancel his birthday celebration is seen as a gesture of respect for the victims and a reflection of the somber mood in the state following the tragic event.
