Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of all schools in Nnewi for one week, citing security concerns linked to the burial of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The precautionary measure follows threats from non-state actors who reportedly vowed to disrupt the burial unless specific unresolved issues were addressed. The situation further escalated on Wednesday evening when gunmen attacked the Nnewi area, killing several individuals and torching a vehicle. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., caused panic, with many residents fleeing for safety.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s burial is set to take place on Friday in his hometown, Umuanuka village, Otolo Nnewi. In anticipation of potential violence, the state government issued a directive to school principals in the Nnewi zone to suspend academic activities until Tuesday next week.
In a circular shared via WhatsApp on Thursday, the government emphasized the need to ensure the safety of students. The message also advised parents to keep day students at home during this period.
A portion of the circular read:
“Good evening Noble Principals!!! I am directed to inform you to close all schools in Nnewi Zone on Thursday 21/11/2024 and Friday 22/11/2024. Please circulate this information on your school WhatsApp groups and inform parents. Try your best to reach students to ensure they are not wandering on the streets in school uniforms. Stay safe!”
The directive underline the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining order amid rising tension in the area. Parents and guardians have been urged to comply with the measure to ensure the well-being of their children.
