Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has recorded 42 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes during the 2024 Easter and Eidel- fitr patrol across the country.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu disclosed this at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.
Ali-Biu said that the special patrol operations which lasted from Thursday, March 28 to Tuesday, April 2, was organised to ensure reduction in road traffic crashes, traffic injuries and fatalities.
He said the success was predicated on a number of pre-campaign activities that had taken place ahead of the commencement of the special operations.
The Corps Marshal further said that he was impressed with the resulted obtained from special operations.
“The 2024 Easter Special Patrol period, the Corps recorded 62 road traffic crashes. This is against 107 in the same period of 2023, representing 42 per cent decrease.
“These crashes involved 417 people in 2024, in contrast to 705 in the previous year, also indicating a significant reduction of 40.9 per cent .
According to him, the analysis also indicated that the Corps recorded reduction in fatal crashes with only 33 victims killed in 2024, against 81 in 2023.
“This represents 59.3 per cent reduction in fatal accident recorded nationwide,’’ he said.
He, however, said that the Corps was decisive in her rescue operations, adding that 195 people were rescued without injuries in 2024 against 345 in the previous year representing 43.4 per cent reduction.
He also disclosed that 4,916 offenders were apprehended during the 2024 special patrol, while in 2023, 7,110 were arrested, representing 30.9 per cent decrease.
“In addition, the Corps has a record of 4,319 offences during the 2024 outing, against a total of 8,220 in 2023 indicating 47.5 per cent decrease.
“More so, the Corps also arraigned 66 traffic offenders in Court, convicted 61 and discharged 5 drivers, “he said.
