The Federal Government boosted has boosted the budget of National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCWD) by 500% in 2024, significantly enhancing support for persons with disabilities.
This development was disclosed by Mr. James Lalu, the commission’s Executive Secretary, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Lalu praises progress made by the disability community in the past year under President Tinubu’s administration.
“President Tinubu’s administration is genuinely dedicated to creating opportunities for People Living with Disabilities (PwDs),” Lalu stated. “The commission has consistently received essential support from the government to ensure the inclusion of PwDs.”
He also stressed the administration’s dedication, citing several initiatives aimed at enhancing governance and services for PwDs.
Shortly after taking office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu activated the African Union Protocol on Disability, reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to improving the lives of PwDs as part of an international treaty.
“President Tinubu promptly signed the protocol, showcasing Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for PwDs,” Lalu noted. “Nigeria is now a fully active member in matters concerning Disabilities under the African Protocol on Disability.”
Additionally, Tinubu established the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Disability Affairs to ensure PwDs are well-represented in governance.
Recently, the President approved the full enforcement of the Accessibility Law, aimed at standardizing accessibility features in public buildings, built environments, and transportation systems for PwDs.
“The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is currently setting up the necessary structures to enforce these accessibility regulations,” Lalu explained. “This empowers the Commission to monitor compliance, seal non-compliant buildings, and take legal action where necessary.”
Lalu noted that the commission has successfully utilized its powers under the new legislation, taking action against a KFC outlet at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for allegedly discriminating against a passenger with reduced mobility.
The significant budget boost and innovative initiatives demonstrate the Tinubu administration’s dedication to enhancing the well-being and empowerment of individuals with disabilities nationwide, promoting a more inclusive and equitable society for all Nigerians.
