Coalition of Southern groups condemn slapping lawmaker

The Coalition of Southern Groups (CSG) have condemned the actions of lawmaker representing Aba South/Aba North Federal  Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh, following a public altercation with an Uber driver.

The group faulted the foul and derogatory language used by the lawmaker.

The group in a statement by its Secretary, Comrade Bello Osaretin said the action brought disrespect to the institution of the National Assembly.

“Hon. Ikwechegh’s actions do not reflect the values and ethics of the good people of the southern region,” the statement read. “As a representative of the people, he has a huge leadership responsibility and should conduct himself honorably.”

Although Hon. Ikwechegh apologized on the floor of the National Assembly, CSG deemed it insufficient. The group demanded a public apology to the Uber driver and the people of southern Nigeria, whom he represents.

“This is a period of healing the wounds of our past leaders, and any action that exacerbates division in the southern region will be resisted and not tolerated,” the statement emphasized.

CSG’s condemnation comes amidst growing concerns over the conduct of public officials and their impact on national unity.
