In an interview session on Couples as Collaborators and Helpmates, a question was posed:
“What is God’s ultimate plan for marriage?” We’ll answer this question in a bit, so keep it in mind.
Marriage is designed to be a collaborative and complementary relationship. It’s crucial to view marriage as a partnership, not a competition. It’s also vital to see it as a union that complements rather than conflicts.
God, by His nature, is a divine Collaborator. He worked alongside the other members of the Godhead—the Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit—in creating everything, including humankind and marriage perfectly. “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image'” (Genesis 1:26).
The Bible also presents God as our divine Helper. In the same way, marriage reflects God’s nature, glory, and purpose. Everything God created, including marriage, is meant to bring glory, honour, and praise to Him, the Creator (Colossians 1:16).
God looks for Marriage that glorifies him. Marriage was not primarily instituted to fulfill our selfish desires.
Whatever we do in marriage—whether in words or deeds—should be done to the glory of God. This implies that all the purposes for which God ordained marriage are meant to bring glory, honor, and praise to God. This, to me, is God’s ultimate plan for everything He created, including marriage.
We must all labour in partnership, purpose, prayers, patience, parenting, planning, preaching, etc in making our marriages glorify God.
However, God’s ultimate plan for marriage is rooted and fulfilled in the following:
Helpmeet and Collaboration
Companionship and Partnership
Unity and Oneness (becoming one flesh)
Procreation and Raising Godly Children
Love and Sacrifice
Purity and Spiritual Growth
Faithfulness to the Marriage Covenant
We will examine the roles of Collaborators and Helpmates in our next teaching.
