Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigerian football stars Ademola Lookman, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and the Super Falcons following their impressive victories at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
In a post shared on his official X account, Obi praised the athletes for bringing honor to the nation, emphasizing the significant role sports plays as a unifying force and an avenue for youth empowerment in Nigeria.
“Nigeria was again the starlight in Continental soccer as our own Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, was crowned the African Footballer of the Year 2024, while Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, is again crowned the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year 2024. To crown it all, the female national team, the Super Falcons, won the continent’s Women’s National Team of the Year at the same awards,” Obi stated.
He lauded the players for their hard work, skill, and excellence, which, according to him, have “written their names in gold” while showcasing Nigeria’s rich sporting talent on the global stage.
Obi further underscored the importance of sports as a critical sector for Nigeria’s development, particularly for its youthful population. He highlighted its potential for job creation and called for greater investment in the sector to unlock opportunities for the nation’s talented youth.
“Sports has not only been a strong unifying factor for us in Nigeria but has proven to be a means of job creation for our talented youths. Moments of victory like this remind us of what we can accomplish as a nation in the area of sports if we invest more in the sector,” Obi added.
He concluded with a message of optimism, reiterating his belief in a “New Nigeria” and the possibilities that lie ahead with adequate attention to sectors like sports.
