The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide strike if the Nigeria Police detain its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, over allegations of terrorism financing.
This ultimatum was delivered on Tuesday morning following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the NLC headquarters. The meeting was convened to discuss the recent police invitation extended to Ajaero.
After deliberations, the NEC resolved that Ajaero should honor the police invitation, but instructed the union’s legal adviser to request an extension to give the NLC President more time to appear before the authorities.
Speaking on behalf of the NLC, Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, the union’s Deputy President, urged the nation’s workforce to be prepared for potential action if the situation escalates.
“As a responsible labour center, we will comply with the police invitation because we operate with transparency,” Sani stated. “However, we are in discussions with our legal team to secure an extension. If the President is detained, we will not hesitate to initiate a nationwide strike. All workers are advised to remain on standby for further instructions from our leadership.”
