A boat carrying 20 marketers from Kwalgai village to Hadin in Auyo Local Government Area of Jigawa State was involved in a tragic where 18 people were rescued from the wreckage.
The Jigawa State Police Command reported on Monday that initial investigations indicate that the canoe capsized due to a combination of factors, including strong waves and excessive overloading, which rendered the operator unable to maintain control of the canoe.
In a press statement in Dutse, the state capital, Lawan Adam, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, revealed that a swift rescue effort was launched immediately after the canoe capsized. A team of policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer, rushed to the scene, and divers, fishermen, and good Samaritans were promptly notified to assist in the rescue operation.
Adam said, “ The rescue team was able to rescue eighteen passengers alive, while two female passengers are still missing.”
He also disclosed that “on July 8, 2024, at about 0600hrs, one Habiba Ado ‘f’ age 18yrs of Kwalgai, who was among the two females missing, has been rescued”, adding that she was quickly rushed to the hospital.
“While efforts were being intensified to rescue the missing woman, the rescued victims have already been rushed to the hospital for medical attention,” Adam noted.
