Statement by the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa
The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (CGGEJA) has observed with grave concern the disturbing revelation involving Blessing Agbomere, an operative of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was filmed wearing a fake police uniform and issuing threats to a sitting governor. This blatant misuse of a police uniform, including the inner vest, is not only an alarming breach of ethical and legal standards but also a clear indication of a sinister plot by the APC to undermine the electoral process in Edo State.
The video adds credence to allegations and suspicion of a plot by the APC to equip its thugs with police uniforms, thereby facilitating their infiltration into official settings under the guise of law enforcement. This nefarious plot poses an immediate threat to the integrity of the upcoming gubernatorial elections and is a direct assault on democratic principles.
We commend the Nigerian Police Force for its prompt response, including the denial of any official association with Agbomere and the subsequent arrest of the individual involved. The Force’s clarification that Agbomere is a mere Supernumerary Officer employed by a private entity is appreciated. Nonetheless, this response, while necessary, is insufficient on its own to address the broader implications of this issue.
The situation demands an unequivocal demonstration of neutrality and adherence to constitutional principles by the Nigerian Police Force. To this end, we call upon the Police to take the following actions immediately:
Release or Properly Charge Detained PDP Members: The recent trend of politically motivated arrests, especially targeting members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, is deeply troubling. Those who have been detained without cause or formal charges must be either released or charged in accordance with the law. The alleged crimes, if any, were committed in Edo State; thus, any legal proceedings should be conducted within the state to ensure justice and fairness.
Uphold Professionalism and Neutrality: The Nigerian Police Force must continue to demonstrate its commitment to professionalism and neutrality. This includes a clear and transparent approach to handling all political matters, avoiding any actions that could be perceived as biased or influenced by partisan interests.
Prevent Future Misuse of Police Uniforms: The Force must ensure strict measures are in place to prevent the misuse of police uniforms and impersonation. The appearance of thugs in official police attire is not only a violation of the law but also a serious threat to the public trust in law enforcement institutions.
The integrity of the electoral process and the protection of democratic institutions in Nigeria depend on the resolute and unbiased conduct of all stakeholders, particularly those tasked with upholding the law. The CGGEJA reiterates its call for the Nigerian Police Force to act decisively and transparently, thereby safeguarding the principles of justice and democracy.
We urge all citizens and political actors to remain vigilant and committed to democratic values as we approach the Edo gubernatorial elections. It is only through collective vigilance and adherence to the rule of law that we can ensure a fair and credible electoral process.
Signed:
Mr. John Mayaki
