Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has approved N80,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state’s civil service with effect from November 1, 2024.
Diri also approved an increase in the monthly pension of retired workers as well as N7 billion to reduce outstanding gratuity liabilities.
This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
Alabrah said Diri acknowledged the challenging times workers face in Bayelsa State due to the rise in the cost of living.
He noted that the related consequential adjustments for the various sectors, as agreed with the leadership of labour in the state, would also be implemented.
The CPS stated: “To address the harsh times and in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment Act 2024), the Prosperity Administration of Governor Douye Diri has approved the sum of N80,000 as minimum wage for the state’s workers
“Governor Diri also approved an increase in the monthly pension of state retirees.
“To further ameliorate the challenges of our retired senior citizens, His Excellency also approved the payment and reduction of the outstanding gratuity liabilities by Seven Billion Naira.”
Alabrah said the governor appreciated the workers and their leadership for their understanding, patience and commitment to the policies and programmes of his administration.
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has approved the payment of N75,000 minimum wage to civil servants in the state.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Monday Uzor, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Uzor quoted Nwifuru to have said that the implementation of the new minimum wage would commence on Monday, October 28.
The governor said the decision followed a careful review of the current economic situation in the country, especially as it affects the workers.
According to him, the least paid civil servant on grade level 2 will enjoy a full minimum wage of 75,000 while from grade level 3 and above will get an increment of 40,000 across board.
He also announced the appointments of Dr Obinna Ezenkwa and Uchenna Otuh as general managers to pilot affairs of Umuoghara Pulverization Plant and Ezzamgbo pipe production factory, respectively.
Nwifuru said their appointment was in line with the Ebonyi State Government’s desire to bring in expertise to drive the industries.
He urged them to bring their expertise to bear in the service and called on stakeholders to support the new appointees to prosper the state.
