President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, may sack seventeen ministers over poor performance.
Thediscovererng.com reports in November 1, 2023, during a three-day cabinet retreat for ministers, presidential aides, permanent secretaries and top government functionaries, the President said the ministers in his cabinet would only retain their offices based on performance, which would be reviewed quarterly.
“If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, we’ll review it. If no performance, you leave us. No one is an island and the buck stops on my desk,” he had said.
Subsequently, Tinubu appointed his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman, as the head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU) that is in charge of the assessment of the ministers.
While speaking on Arise TV’s News Night in April, she said the unit had received performance reports from at least 20 of the 35 ministries.
The President aide explained that the assessment report would be a product of a joint effort of the ministers, citizens and industry experts.
“Our submission is for the first quarter. So, the first quarter has just ended, and we have initiated the assessment process. The ministers have all been asked to submit their performance based on the deliverables. Based on what is out there in the public space. They would write to say, ‘Based on every deliverable you have given me, this is what I’ve done within the first quarter of the year.,” she had said.
However, according to report Bala-Usman has already submitted the report on the assessment of the ministers to the President.
According to the Villa source, the report indicated that 17 non performing ministers currently dot the current administration.
However, the source said the president might have jettisoned his plan to show non-performing ministers in his administration the way out as he marks one year in office.
The source said after receiving the report, the President claimed that sacking 17 non performing ministers would create problems for his administration and people would complain.
The source stated: “After the assessment, Hadiza told the President that 17 Ministers that performed below expectations must be relieved of their appointments.
“She emphasised that if the President wants Nigerians to take him serious, the 17 Ministers have to go.
“To her dismay, the President said sacking 17 Ministers will create problem, he said people will complain. The President was reluctant to take the bold decision. The President seems not ready to make changes on the non performing ministers.”
The source noted that if the President later decides to make changes in his cabinet, he might not let go of the 17 indicted ministers
