A technology firm, Flexify Solutions, has launched the CyberAgric app to boost the country’s food production.
In a statement made on Monday, the firm said that the mobile application leveraged artificial intelligence to support Nigerian farmers, particularly those involved in cash crop cultivation such as cassava and maize.
It added that farmers could take preemptive steps to safeguard their crops and guarantee maximum harvests by using smartphone cameras to snap pictures of their crops and get real-time analysis and advice.
It noted that CyberAgric was made to work offline, so farmers in isolated locations with poor internet access could still use it.
“CyberAgric is a cutting-edge mobile application that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to support Nigerian farmers, particularly those involved in cash crop cultivation such as cassava and maize.
“The app’s groundbreaking features include early disease detection, with the capability to identify diseases like cassava brown streak disease in cassava leaves within the first two weeks of infection. By utilising smartphone cameras, farmers can capture images of their crops and receive real-time analysis and recommendations, empowering them to take proactive measures to protect their crops and ensure optimal yields.
“Moreover, CyberAgric is designed to function offline, ensuring accessibility for farmers in remote areas with limited internet connectivity,” the statement partly read.
Johnson Oyeniyi, the Chief Executive Officer of Flexify Solutions, comment that the goal of the app was to ensure that every Nigerian farmer, regardless of their location or internet access, could benefit from advanced agricultural technology.
According to PwC, agriculture in Nigeria is mainly divided into four sectors: crop production, fishing, livestock and forestry.
Crop production remains the largest segment and it accounts for about 87.6 per cent of the sector’s total output, followed by livestock, fishing and forestry at 8.1 per cent, 3.2 per cent and 1.1 per cent, respectively.
