The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has launched a sensitisation and awareness campaign targeting key market areas, including Balogun, Ereko, Martins, Mandilas, Idunmota, and its environs.
A statement on Wednesday by Ololade Agboola, the deputy spokesperson for the agency, disclosed this amidst the recent devastating fire outbreak in parts of the Lagos Island market, resulting in important losses of property and investments, running into millions of naira.
Earlier in April, one person died and several others sustained injuries when fire razed several buildings in Dosumu market on Lagos Island.
As a result of the incident, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the market to closure.
According to the fire department, efforts to combat the rising number of market fire accidents have been stepped up.
“In collaboration with a member of the Lagoon Island Legislative Council, Hon. Taiwo Oyekan, the service conducted awareness sessions in selected areas of the market. The sessions emphasised the importance of fire safety consciousness, outlined appropriate actions to take in the event of a fire, and provided guidance on combating incipient fires.
the statement read, “Members of the public were urged to collaborate with the government to ensure the maintenance of a safe and fire-free environment in Lagos,”.
