Uduak Udoh, an aide to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has become the subject of intense criticism following an unfortunate blunder during the funeral of Akwa Ibom State First Lady, Patience Umo Eno, last Friday.
Addressing journalists at the solemn event, Udoh made a startling and inappropriate statement, “congratulating” Governor Umo Eno on the loss of his wife. He said, “Let me first of all congratulate His Excellency, the governor of the state, over the demise of his dear lovely wife. I want to wish all of us a very happy state today. May God bless you. Thank you.”

The comments quickly sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many expressing disbelief at the apparent lack of sensitivity and professionalism. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism, as citizens questioned the competence of individuals entrusted with high-profile government roles.
Veteran journalist and media personality Reuben Abati joined the conversation, describing the remarks as a stark reflection of the broader issues in Nigeria’s leadership standards. Abati pointed to Udoh’s gaffe as indicative of a need for more qualified and competent individuals in public office.
The incident has not only marred the somber occasion but also reignited conversations about accountability and excellence in government representation. Despite the backlash, neither Uduak Udoh nor Senate President Akpabio has issued an official statement regarding the controversy.
