Otunba Segun Showunmi, a renowned Nigerian politician, has launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition, a paradigm shift in the country’s democratic conversation.
This movement aims to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from the dangers of regression, electoral manipulation, and the erosion of judicial integrity.
Showunmi emphasised that Nigeria’s democracy has made progress since 1999, with the successful transfer of power from one party to another in 2015. However, he noted that the enthusiasm of citizens has waned over the years, with each election proving to be worse than the previous one.
The National Opposition Movement Coalition seeks to engage Nigerians, offer guidance on opposition issues, and educate citizens on how democracy and electoral outcomes affect them. The movement will also work towards eradicating the menace of vote trading and promoting transparent, credible democratic and electoral processes.
Showunmi announced that the movement will embark on zonal town hall meetings across the country, starting from December 7, 2024. The meetings will be held in the following zones:
North Central Zone: December 7, 2024
North East Zone: December 14, 2024
North West Zone: January 4, 2025
South-South Zone: January 11, 2025
South East Zone: February 8, 2025
South West Zone: February 15, 2025
At each zone, citizens will be encouraged to initiate mobilization processes and select their leaders to oversee local operations. The movement, dubbed “THE ALTERNATIVE,” seeks to promote a vibrant opposition and transparent democratic processes in Nigeria.
