Witnesses at the scene expressed frustration at the lack of emergency response, which exacerbated the damage. The cause of the fire remains unknown at the time of reporting, but authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the source and extent of the losses.
This unfortunate event comes at a time when the institution is embroiled in a contentious leadership crisis. The Federal Government recently announced the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, citing a lack of qualifications for the role. However, the embattled VC has refused to step down, declaring that only a competent court decision can compel him to vacate his position. This ongoing tussle has left the institution in turmoil, with stakeholders calling for urgent intervention to restore normalcy.
The fire incident adds to the mounting challenges facing the university.
Calls are growing for immediate action to address the situation and prevent further damage to the institution’s reputation and facilities.
