Mia Le Roux, the reigning Miss South Africa 2024, has announced her withdrawal from the Miss Universe competition, citing health reasons.
In a statement released on Friday by the Miss South Africa Organisation, Le Roux expressed her gratitude to South Africans for their unwavering support. She described the decision as “incredibly challenging” but necessary to prioritize her well-being.
“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” Le Roux said.
“However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength,” she added.
Miss South Africa Organisation Stands by Le Roux
The Miss South Africa Organisation praised Le Roux for her resilience during this difficult time and affirmed its commitment to supporting her recovery.
“Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period. Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health,” the organization said in the statement.
Le Roux’s withdrawal marks another significant development in a turbulent year for the Miss South Africa pageant. Earlier, Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant of Nigerian and South African heritage, withdrew from the competition after facing social media backlash over her nationality.
Adetshina, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent, became the subject of public criticism when questions about her eligibility surfaced. The controversy escalated after the South African Home Affairs Ministry launched an investigation, alleging that Adetshina’s mother may have committed identity theft.
Amid the fallout, Adetshina moved on to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, which she won, earning her a spot to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition.
Following Adetshina’s exit, Mia Le Roux, a descendant of Dutch settlers known as Boers, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024.
As Le Roux steps back to focus on her health, the Miss South Africa Organisation has yet to announce a replacement for her at the Miss Universe competition. South Africans continue to show their support for Le Roux, wishing her a swift recovery and applauding her grace during this challenging time.
