A year ago, before joining TheCable, I had a major wake-up call after a particularly crazy week at my previous job. I was juggling endless deadlines, breaking news, and, of course, the demands of being a mother of two.
I remember rushing through dinner with my family, only to get straight back into work once the kids were in bed. It felt like I was always on the go, never really able to catch my breath.
That night, it hit me—I couldn’t keep living like this. Something had to change. I realised that work-life effectiveness (because I don’t think you can balance both) wasn’t about trying to do everything; it was about being more intentional with my time.
Thankfully, TheCable has supported me by allowing more flexible hours, which has made all the difference.
Here are three things that have helped me maintain a better balance:
1. Stay organised
Keeping a detailed calendar—whether it’s for work deadlines or family activities—helps me stay on top of my commitments. I rely on digital tools to manage my time efficiently and make sure I’m not missing anything important. Staying organised prevents stress and ensures I’m on top of things both at home and in the newsroom.
2. Delegate
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that I don’t have to do everything myself. At work, I trust my amazing team to take charge when needed. And at home, I’ve learned to rely on my partner and even the kids to help out more. Sharing the load allows me to focus on what matters most without burning out.
3. Me-time
I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself, but now I see it as essential. Whether it’s reading at least 10 pages of a book every morning or listening to my favourite songs, or hanging out with friends, those moments of solitude keep me grounded and energised. It’s my way of pouring into myself. When I make time for myself, I show up better both at work and at home.
It’s not always easy, but with these three strategies—delegation, carving out me-time, and staying organised—I’ve found a rhythm that works.
How do you make time for both your career and personal life? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
