The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, labeling him “Africa’s most infamous election loser” following his claims on social media that the 2023 presidential election was stolen from him.
The statement, signed by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, criticized Atiku’s continued contestation of the election results and his repeated bids for the presidency.
According to Morka, Atiku, who has lost six presidential races over the past 17 years, has continually been rejected by Nigerian voters. “Since serving as vice president, he has lost election to every single president that has been elected to office in Nigeria,” Morka stated, alleging that the former Vice President’s defeats reflect “untrustworthiness, incompetence, chronic corruption, visionlessness, and a lack of sportsmanship.”
APC’s statement also rebuked Atiku for what it described as “political desperation” and inability to accept his electoral losses, alleging that the former vice president’s claim of election fraud is “beyond comical.”
The APC spokesperson further referenced Atiku’s role as Vice President under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government, alleging that his tenure was marked by widespread corruption, including the controversial petrol subsidy policies and challenges in the power sector. “Atiku was the Vice President in the government that created the crooked and viscerally corrupt petrol subsidy… and laid the foundation for endemic corruption,” Morka added.
In a pointed critique of Atiku’s recent release, “What I Would Do Differently,” the APC argued that the former vice president has failed to present solutions relevant to Nigeria’s current economic challenges, instead offering “stale, tired, tested, and failed economic ideas.”
Morka urged Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s administration, expressing confidence in APC’s ongoing efforts to restore economic stability and growth for the country. “We urge Nigerians to stand fast in support of the APC-administration of President Bola Tinubu and [its] valiant effort to restore vitality to our economy,” Morka stated.
The APC’s remarks follow weeks of heated exchanges between the ruling party and Atiku, who has been vocal about his objections to the conduct and outcome of the 2023 presidential election. The former Vice President has yet to respond to the APC’s latest statement.
