Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has dismissed reports claiming he filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to block any possible arrest or prosecution after his tenure ends.
This was clarified in a statement released on Tuesday by Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Lawal Pedro, who described the reports as “misleading information.”
“Our attention has been drawn to a news report circulating in a section of the media titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC Over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure.’ Mr. Sanwo-Olu did not sue the EFCC in any court, as he has no reason to do so,” Pedro stated.
The Attorney General reiterated that the governor, who still has nearly three years left in his second term, has not been contacted by the EFCC nor implicated in any investigations. He emphasized that Sanwo-Olu, like all sitting governors, enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office and stressed there are no indications that any charges would be brought against him after his term.
Pedro further noted the governor’s ongoing commitment to transparency and responsible governance in Lagos State.
The statement comes amid speculation fueled by earlier reports suggesting that Governor Sanwo-Olu had filed a preventive lawsuit against the EFCC. According to those initial accounts, the alleged suit—filed through lawyer Darlington Ozurumba in June—was reportedly brought before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The report claimed the case aimed to preempt potential EFCC actions tied to alleged misconduct that might arise after Sanwo-Olu’s tenure concludes.
However, the governor’s office firmly rejected the reports, calling them baseless and affirming that there is no ongoing or anticipated case with the EFCC.
