The House of Representatives has referred Alex Ikwechegh, the lawmaker representing Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency, Abia State, to its Ethics and Privileges Committee following allegations of misconduct.
This decision came after the House adopted a motion of privilege raised by House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, during Tuesday’s plenary session. Ihonvbere informed the House that a video surfaced on Sunday showing Ikwechegh allegedly assaulting an Uber driver and making threatening remarks, which he argued brought disrepute to the legislative chamber.
Although Ikwechegh expressed remorse and offered a public apology, saying, “I’m sorry,” the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, emphasized the need for due process. He directed the case to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further legislative review.
Kalu stated, “We are guided by our rules. If the dignity of the parliament is ridiculed, we must investigate through the lens of justice. Ikwechegh’s apology was emotional and remorseful, but that alone is not enough. Our rules must be followed.”
The committee is expected to conduct a thorough investigation and report back to the House on its findings and recommendations.
