Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has expressed his disappointment following his omission from the 2024 CAF Player of the Year shortlist.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled the list on Thursday, leaving out the Bayer Leverkusen star despite his stellar performances last season.
Boniface played a pivotal role for Bayer Leverkusen, helping the club secure the Bundesliga title and lift the DFB-Pokal trophy. He also contributed to his team’s impressive Europa League campaign, where they finished as runners-up.
The striker had an impressive season, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in 34 matches. His efforts earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and a place in the league’s Team of the Season.
Reacting to the omission, Boniface took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts. “Rookie of the Season. Team of the Season. No worries. I no play AFCON. Na why I dey wait for Memes d’Or,” he wrote, hinting at his absence from the Africa Cup of Nations due to an injury.
