The Federal Government, through the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), has collaborated with educational stakeholders in Jigawa State to enhance community participation in school management, aiming to improve learning outcomes.
Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of NSSEC, led the engagement during a two-day working visit to the state. The visit included discussions with the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) chairpersons from the 27 local government areas, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Association of Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPS), the State Commissioner for Higher Education, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Ajayi emphasized that involving communities in school management is crucial for educational development, aligning with the “Renewal Hope” agenda. He highlighted that SBMC, as an established community-based structure, can effectively drive these goals with the right support.
“We are here to understand the roles you have been playing in the schools and to provide additional guidance to enhance your participation in school management,” he said. “It is widely acknowledged that the more communities take ownership of school management, the greater the success in promoting transparency, accountability, and improved learning outcomes.”
Dr. Ajayi reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to working with Jigawa’s stakeholders to address the challenges facing the education sector.
Dr. Isa Yusuf Chamo, Jigawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, praised the SBMC’s contributions and noted that the federal government’s visit came at a critical time as the state undergoes educational reforms.
Alhaji Jamilu Basiru Sanusi, Chairman of SBMC and District Head of Dutse, described the committee as a community-oriented initiative that has been supporting school management since its inception in 2013. He stressed SBMC’s dedication to education as a key driver of moral, social, and economic development in the community.
“SBMC understands the significance of education in the development of any society, and we are fully committed to contributing to this sector,” he said.
The collaborative efforts aim to strengthen community involvement, transparency, and accountability in school management, ultimately fostering better educational outcomes in Jigawa State.
