Joe Igbokwe, a staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, has recently come under scrutiny after taking to social media to criticize the government’s handling of Nigeria’s new electricity tariff.
Igbokwe’s unexpected criticism has drawn significant attention and backlash from Nigerians, who are expressing their dismay at his sudden shift in stance.
In a Facebook post on Saturday evening, Igbokwe highlighted the steep rise in electricity costs, detailing his personal experience with his office in Surulere. He noted that what previously cost him N20,000 for 300 units of electricity now lasts only one day with the same amount of money. Describing the situation as dire, he urged President Tinubu to address the issue urgently, stating, “PBAT, PLEASE LOOK INTO THE NEW ELECTRICITY TARIFF IN NIGERIA. IT WILL KILL BUSINESSES IF THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT ACT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.”
This plea from Igbokwe, who has long been a vocal supporter of Tinubu, has not been well received by many Nigerians. Social media users quickly took to the comments section to criticize Igbokwe, expressing that his newfound awareness of the economic hardships is too little, too late. Some users mocked his situation, noting that he is only now beginning to experience the struggles that ordinary Nigerians have faced for years.
One commenter remarked, “Oh Nigeria have happened to you and now you feel what we have been feeling since this brand A stuff. This is just the start; you have not started complaining. It will reach everybody. Soon they will add both the road and the air we breathe on brand A.”
Another user humorously added, “Hahahahaha! . It will reach everybody. (Ire akari).”
Further complicating Igbokwe’s situation, Thediscovererng.com found a video which was uploaded on YouTube by TVC in February 2024, showing him on TVC, confidently assuring Nigerians that they should give Tinubu more time to address the country’s issues. His earlier assurances now stand in stark contrast to his current complaints, leading many to question his credibility and the sincerity of his support for the President.
