Renowned activist lawyer, Madubuachi Idam, has urged the National Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, citing the unauthorized purchase of a new presidential jet as grounds for removal.
Idam argues that the presidency’s failure to secure National Assembly approval for the acquisition violates constitutional provisions, warranting impeachment under Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution.
The lawyer criticizes President Tinubu for prioritizing personal comfort over Nigeria’s economic struggles, characterizing his administration as marked by “reckless abuse of scarce public funds” and “wastefulness.”
Despite public outcry, Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga defended the purchase, claiming the jet was acquired below market value, saving Nigeria billions in maintenance and fuel costs.
Idam counters that the acquisition exemplifies Tinubu’s disregard for the nation’s economic challenges, emphasizing the need for accountability.
“The National Assembly must reclaim its authority and invoke impeachment powers against the President to halt this excessive spending,” Idam stresses.
