In Gombe State, a number of major companies have ceased operations, leaving a significant impact on the local economy.
The British Cotton Ginnery (BCGA), once a thriving enterprise, now is no more. In the past, the company used to be very famous and active and had provided jobs to teeming residents of the state.
The popularity of the firm made the host community to be called after it and it is still called ‘BCGA’.
Other notable companies, including PZ Depot, BATA Shoes company, Onigbinde Stores, and Manto Processing Company in Kumo, have also closed their doors.
But Manto was established to be producing mango juice and tomato paste, but since its commissioning, it never did so and is still non operational.
Residents of Gombe lament the non-functionality of these great companies, recalling the economic benefits they once provided.
“These companies used to provide jobs to at least 50 people or more each,” said Malam Adamu Tukur, a resident of Gombe. “Their closure has left many families without a source of income.”, he noted.
Another resident, Mrs Aisha Mohammed added, “We miss the vibrant atmosphere they brought to our community. They were the backbone of our economy, and their absence has been deeply felt.”
The residents called on the state government to invite more investors to revitalize the industrial sector.
“We need companies that will provide employment opportunities for our youth,” said Mr Ibrahim, a local businessman.
“The government should create an enabling environment to attract investors and support existing businesses.”, he added.
Manto Processing Company, commissioned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to produce mango juice and tomato paste, remains dormant, with no government commitment to revive its operations.
The closure of these companies has resulted in significant economic stagnation and lost opportunities for the state.
However, efforts are underway to revitalise the industrial sector as the state governor Inuwa Yahaya is establishing a multi-billion naira industrial park along Deba road, aiming to attract investors and encourage the establishment of new companies in the state.
This initiative seeks to breathe new life into Gombe’s industrial landscape and restore its former glory.
