First female Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Blessing Alims has appointed 50 aides.
The appointments were confirmed in a letter dated August 1, 2024, and signed by Alims.
According to the letter, the appointments take immediate effect after screening and confirmation by the Senate.
Alims was elected on June 14, 2024, as the first-ever female SUG President of the university.
Alims is currently studying Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the Department of Political Science with a CGPA of 4.75 at the moment.
She hails from Gakem, in Bekwarra LGA, Cross River State.
In 2022, Blessing Alims was one of the winners amongst over 150 contestants drawn from across Africa to participate in the Youngers Foundation Female and More Social Impact Project. She was the only winner from Cross River State, a win that saw her going on a 10-day learning visit to Kigali, Rwanda.
Meanwhile, the development has generated mixed reactions from netizens, while many claimed the appointments are way too much and showed a lack of capacity to manage resources others said it’s nothing but a mirror of the larger society.
