The Kano State Government has purchased 52 trucks of fertilizers, valued at N1.2 billion, and is distributing them free of charge to small-scale farmers in all 44 local government areas of the state.
Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, the State Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, announced the state government’s agricultural initiatives during a press conference on Tuesday.
The government has also procured 180 more trucks of fertilizer, worth N5 billion, from the State Fertilizer Production Company. As part of its subsidy program, the fertilizers are being sold to the 44 local governments at a discounted price, equivalent to 50% of the original cost.
The commissioner also disclosed that the Federal Government is giving to the state NPK, and urea, which would also be distributed to farmers free of charge.
“We are to receive NPK from Minna, Kaduna, and urea from Port Harcourt on the Federal Government support,” he said.
The commissioner also explained further that a committee had already been constituted under the interim chairmen of the local governments to ensure the effective distribution of the commodity at each of the wards across the 44 LGAs.
“The government has set up a committee of traditional, religious institutions, police, and other stakeholders, to ensure that the commodities reached out to real farmers in the state, “ he added.
Dr. Mahmoud noted that the fertilizers delivered to the local government areas were procured as part of the state government’s strategy to enhance the availability and affordability of these critical inputs for farmers, with a special focus on supporting smallholder farmers in the state.
