The House of Representatives members, on Thursday, July 18, made a unanimous decision to donate 50% of their monthly salaries in an effort to alleviate the economic challenges currently facing the nation and show solidarity with Nigerian citizens who are struggling financially.
The Speaker hinted that each member of the House of Representatives receives a monthly salary of approximately N600,000.
The Deputy Speaker suggested an amendment to a motion urging young Nigerians to refrain from protesting against the country’s economic hardship, proposing instead that lawmakers consider donating 50% of their salaries to alleviate the widespread hunger and economic struggles faced by citizens.
However, when the Speaker, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen put the motion to voice vote, the majority of members voted in favour of the motion.
Kalu, in proposing the amendment, reminded members that the House took a similar decision during the COVID-19 era and that it worked very well for the country.
The Speaker praised members for their resolve to sacrifice part of their salaries to address hunger in the land just as some members asked the Executive to also make sacrifices in line with what the Lawmakers have done.
