The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has launched a joint investigation with Enugu State security authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Favour Okenyi, a 100-level student whose body was discovered in a campus drainage system.
Okwun Omeaku, the acting Public Relations Officer of the University of Nigeria, revealed this in a statement obtained on Monday.
According to sources, the 100-level student of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Favour Okenyi, was last seen attending a chemistry practical session before her disappearance.
Her body was however found near the Eni Njoku male hostel, around the varsity’s stadium junction, on Friday evening.
Multiple videos and photos circulating on social media platforms showed the corpse in what appeared to be a drainage system.
Reacting further, Omeaku, while describing the incident as shocking, condoled with the deceased family and added that the university authority was working with operatives to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
He said, “The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the distressing discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN.
“The university administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased for the tragic death of such a promising young student.
“The management is collaborating with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and to prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents in the future.”
He concluded that an investigation that would aid the arrest of the perpetrators was ongoing.
“The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation that will aid investigations and fish out perpetrator/s of the evil act,” Omeaku concluded.
When reached for comment on Sunday, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, requested that our correspondent send a text message, which was promptly sent to his mobile line.
Despite repeated attempts to reach him, Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, failed to respond to multiple calls and messages sent on both Sunday and Monday.
