The Abia State Government and Persons Living With Disabilities in the state have issued a joint public alert stating that the Abia State Disability Commission is not currently functional, as it has not been reconstituted, and does not have appointed leadership.
David Anyaele, Special Assistant to the governor of Abia State on PLWDs, stated, “It has come to the notice of the Abia State government that one year after His Excellency, the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, had announced the dissolution of all boards of ministries, parastatals and agencies of government pending reconstitution, one Mr. Eldad Monu, has been parading himself as the Chairman of Abia State Disability Commission.”
Anyaele who also doubles as the Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities said, “The government of Abia State views Mr. Monu’s action as an affront, an act of deceit and impersonation as many national and international organisations have been falsely and fraudulently led to funding his activities under the guise of representing the Disability Commission.
“The Abia State government is therefore calling on the general public to disregard and disassociate themselves from the said Mr Eldad Monu, as he neither represents the Disability Commission nor the state government.
“Furthermore, the public is advised to report any entreaties, requests or demands by this Mr Eldad Monu, or any other person acting on his behalf, using the Disability Commission as a cover, to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Government House, Umuahia, for appropriate action.
“In due time, the board of the Abia State Disability Commission will be reconstituted, just as those of some agencies that have been recently reconstituted and inaugurated by His Excellency the governor, Dr Alex Otti, and the general public will be appropriately communicated.”
Anyaele enthused that “it is disappointing and unfortunate that somebody is presenting himself as the chairman of the committee.”
He also added, “Recognizing that people with disabilities are vulnerable, the government is taking every step to ensure that every support given to the vulnerable people gets to them, just as it ensures that they are not left behind in the scheme of things.”
He stated that the state government has taken steps to investigate Monu’s activities based on several calls the government has received, noting, “At the appreciate time, we will take action.”
