The Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday brought eight individuals before the Ekiti State Magistrate Court, Ado Ekiti District, to face charges of unlawful assembly and breaching the peace.
The eight defendants, identified by their names and ages, are: Adejuyigbe Babafemi, 24; Yahaya Umaru, 30; Idris Olaniyi, 28; Olaniyi Olaoluwa, 21; Isiaka Abdulmalik, 20; Makanjuola Dare, 45; Sunday Ogunleye, 29; and Daniel Oluwaseun, 29.
Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, the police prosecutor, told the court on Tuesday that the defendants allegedly committed the offenses on June 28 at 9:30 p.m. in multiple locations, including Okuta Gbokuta Lori Hill, Post Office, Okeyinmi, and Isato Oke areas in Ado-Ekiti.
He said that the defendants “did conspire among themselves to commit unlawful assembly in the bush in such a manner likely to cause the breach of peace in the neighbourhood to fear, disturbed and provoke the peace of the areas.
“The defendants committed the offence which is punishable under sections 442, 57(2)(4) and 181(d) Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2021,” he said.
The defendants’ counsel, Opeyemi Esan, asked the court to grant bail, arguing that his clients would provide credible sureties and would attend all court proceedings.
Chief Magistrate Olanrewaju Owoleso granted the defendants bail, setting the amount at N100,000 each, with an additional requirement of one surety, also in the sum of N100,000. The case was subsequently adjourned until August 1 for further hearing.
